Armenian Roots, Bengali Heart

Our founder’s ancestor, Nicholas Marcar Pogose, was born in 1767. An Armenian by heritage, he and his family were deeply embedded in the civic and spiritual life of Bengal, with enduring ties to the Armenian churches of Dhaka and Kolkata. Alongside his wife, Catherine, they raised five children in Dhaka, where the seeds of legacy would take root.

Two of his sons would become central to our story: Gregory Nicholas Pogose, born in 1800, and Peter Nicholas Pogose, born in 1805. It was through Peter, and his marriage to Elizabeth Thaddeus (1813–1873), that the line continued with their son:

Nicholas Peter Pogose (1830–1876): The Visionary Behind the Name

Nicholas Peter Pogose, born in Dhaka in 1830, was a pioneering educator and philanthropist who made history as the founder in 1848 of Pogose School, the oldest private school in Dhaka. He was not merely a schoolmaster—he was a cultural force who believed education was the most powerful investment in human dignity and national progress.

He studied at Dhaka College, where he distinguished himself as a junior scholar and a patron of mathematics, donating 100 rupees to create a gold medal for excellence. His reputation as a brilliant student turned benefactor earned him the respect of both colonial and local communities.

A report from 1852 reads:

"The school is under the patronage of Mr. N.P. Pogose, an ex-student of the college and now a member of the Local Committee (of Instruction) and a zamindar of the district. The number of pupils in daily attendance is about 80, the amount of fees collected monthly about 50 rupees,... the monthly deficit was defrayed by Mr. Pogose himself."

By 1856, his efforts were celebrated in the Bengal Presidency records:

“Mr. Pogose's school is far superior to any grant-in-aid institution in my division… solely due to the indefatigable care of the proprietor, N. Pogose, who sustained exertions in the cause of education.”
